Similarities between two or more languages (whether in typology or vocabulary) may be due to genetic relationships (descent of a common ancestral language), borrowing between languages, maintaining characteristics when a population adopts a new language, or simply by chance. If little or no direct documentation of ancestral languages is available, it can be difficult to determine whether the resemblance is genetic or area.
